Eager students in Esperanza explore the Internet.
An upgraded Information Com-munication and Technology (ICT) Centre will provide computer and internet access for more than 300 students from Esperanza Village in the Cayo District.
Social Investment Fund (SIF) Public Relations Director Mike Hernandez Jr. said the project included the rehabilitation of a small concrete building measuring 15ft by 24 ft behind the Esperanza Community Centre, including the replacement of the ceiling, repairs to the roof frame, painting of the building, replacement of broken louvres on windows, reinforcement of the doors, supply and installation of security bars on windows and doors, plastic screen for the windows, , tiling, upgrading of the electrical system, plumbing repairs, construction of formica computer tables, supply and installation of an air-conditioning unit, and an alarm system.
The building became an ICT Centre with the addition of 10 computers, a camera, a commercial printer and scanner, and office furniture, including computer desks and chairs, all supplied as part of the project.
Hernandez said the centre will facilitate easy access to computer and internet services for students of the village who in past had to stay back in San Ignacio after school to complete research and assignments.
The centre will provide the service to students at a subsidized cost to generate income for the village council to maintain the facility.
Minister of Youth, and Sports, Area Representative Elvin Penner was the guest speaker for the inauguration. Other speakers included representatives of the Social Investment Fund and the Esperanza Village Council.
Hernandez said the project was implemented by S.I.F., a statutory body in the Ministry of Economic Development ,and financed by the Government of Belize through a loan from the Caribbean Development Bank in the sum of $60,000. The community of Esperanza contributed $1,100 in the form of labor.
Esperanza Village, a farming community 3 miles from San Ignacio, has close on 1,400 residents, of whom 300 are students enrolled in the village’s two primary schools.
